Yes you can bring your phone number to Vonage if you like. Otherwise, if you want a new local phone number or a non-local number and area code either is an option with Vonage internet phone. Maybe you have a need to do a great deal of business or calling in another area code in another city or state? If so, pick a number in the Vonage availability of area codes. accross the country and provide customers with a local number to your business. Additional virtual phone numbers availabe at $4.99 a month with various area codes available, the virtual number links to your primary number with Vonage. At this time only US and Canada based virtual numbers were available.

Bring you current phone number or ...
Yes phone number mobility and internet phone with Vonage go hand in hand (feature not tested but was available at time of sign-up.) Keep your current phone number and bring it to your internet phone. Remember not to cancel your other service til you have a successful transfer. Additional services include adding a virtual phone number, why a virtual number? Maybe you have a close family member in another state and with a virtual number you can add another state and citys area code to your phone number list so you can keep your long winded phone calls short on cost for them. Say you do a great deal of business in New York or with a large New York client but you live in Oregon. You can add for a small monthly fee a virtual phone number with a New York area code thereby creating a local number in that area codes local vicinity.

Ready for use
Vonage includes a phone interface box to accept your home phone into the digital internet PC calling. Connect the phone adapter to your standard RJ-11 phone and the other end to your cable modem or DSL modem. There is no router required. VoiceMail can be played by phone or through your PC computer online. Voice Mails work the common telephone company way with the phone line stutter upon picking up the receiver or through the Vonage email notification, a nice additional way to catch missed calls if you use an email notifier when your away from the phone.

A newer Vonage internet phone service now has an internet phone option for laptops that requires no adapter box for road and travel useage like hotels with high speed internet connections. Its few extra dollars a month and includes time with it from State to State and to Canada. Plug your laptop into the high speed conneciton (DSL or Cable) and use the CD software dialer to access your calling. The Vonage laptop version has the same call forwarding capability as the regular system.
